Welcome to the Digital World!!

Since the advent of cloud based technology, the global job market has truly become universally available. In the digital age, jobs are now universally available globally making it possible for you to work in different countries, outside your country of residence without migrating. Skills are exported digitally every day in this borderless digital world. This is part of the digital revolution.

Remote Medical Coding

One of such many job avenues is remote medical coding jobs. Medical coding involves assigning codes (these codes are made up of alphabet and numbers) to diseases, diagnoses, services and so on rendered to a patient. These codes are used for several things including insurance billing and reimbursement.

Among the codes used by medical coders are the International Classification of Diseases (ICD), Current Procedure Terminologies (CPT) and Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) codes.

International Classification of Diseases by the World Health Organization (WHO)

International Classification of Diseases (ICD) codes are a set of designations used by healthcare staff to communicate diseases, symptoms, abnormal findings, and other elements of a patient’s diagnosis in a way that is universally accepted by those in the medical and insurance fields. The tenth and most recent edition is known as ICD-10. The ICD is developed by the World Health Organization. ICD-10 has been replaced by ICD-11 since January 2022.

ICD-10 codes are passed to insurance companies to establish the medical necessity of the services a provider is asking to be paid for. There are more than 70,000 of them, and their highly specific definitions are understood by all who use them.

While ICD-10 codes often appear on patient paperwork and bills, they don’t always. Looking up these codes can become quite important if you’re trying to sort out a medical pre-approval or billing issue with your insurance provider. An incorrect code can mean that coverage of practitioner visits and treatments gets denied.

Current Procedure Terminology (CPT)

CPT is developed by the American Medical Association (AMA). It offers doctors and health care professionals a uniform language for coding medical services and procedures to streamline reporting, increase accuracy and efficiency.

CPT codes are also used for administrative management purposes such as claims processing and developing guidelines for medical care review. It is used to report medical, surgical, radiology, laboratory, anesthesiology, genomic sequencing, evaluation and management (E/M) services under public and private health insurance programs.

Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System

HCPCS is a collection of standardized codes that represent medical procedures, supplies, products and services. The codes are used to facilitate the processing of health insurance claims by Medicare and other insurers. HCPCS is divided into two subsystems, Level I and Level II.
